Sow the Seeds

The seeds that you have received from Portland Community Realty are a blend of native and some naturalized wildflowers- all of which can be frequently found in the Willamette Valley.   When the first settlers arrived here in the Portland area, they found a spectacular array of wildflowers in fields and meadows that are now only a memory.   Planting these seeds helps restore- if only in a little way- a small piece of our natural heritage.

Your packet of seeds includes a mixture which may contain some of the following wildflower varieties:

  • Alyssum
  • Bachelor Buttons
  • Blue Flax
  • California Poppy
  • Candytuft
  • Catchfly
  • Chinese House
  • Clarkia
  • Columbine
  • Coreopsis
  • Dame’s Rocket
  • Dianthus
  • Evening Promrose
  • Foxglove
  • Gaillardia
  • Gillia
  • Godetia
  • Gypsophilia
  • Iceland Poppy
  • Larkspur
  • Linaria maroccana
  • Lupine
  • Nemophila
  • Red Flax
  • Rudbeckia
  • Shasta daisy
  • Shirley Poppy
  • Wallflower
  • Yarrow

These seeds can be planted anytime from early spring until late fall. Many wildflowers require a period of cold in order to break their dormancy, so sowing your seeds in the fall will assure that the maximum variety your wildflowers germinate.

Regardless of the time of year,

1. Select an area of your yard that gets plenty of sun and will be easy to leave undisturbed.   Try to find an area that is at least several square feet, but the seeds can be spread over a much larger area to achieve a more natural look.

2. Sprinkle the seeds over the area and cover with a small amount of top soil- but not too much!   About 1/8 of an inch is ideal.

3. If the seeds are planted during a period of warmer weather, be sure to water them frequently during germination, then occasionally until the plants are well established.

Once you’ve planted your wildflowers, don’t forget about them!   It is easy to mistake them for weeds when they are just beginning to grow.  Give them a little bit of time and they will more than thank you for your effort!

In the fall, after your wildflowers have grown for a year, you can move perennial plants to locations that you prefer and collect annual seeds and resow them wherever you wish!

Besides being beautiful to look at, your wildflowers will also attract birds, bees and butterflies to your yard.   I hope you enjoy them!
